Audi S3 Gen 1 Overview
The Audi S3 arrived in May 1999, following the launch of the A3 in 1995. Many expected the A3 to be a cut-down Audi A4, but it was not: the A4 used Volkswagen Group’s B5 (PL45) platform, while the A3 was built on the newer PQ34 platform that also underpinned the Golf Mk4 and the TT Mk1. The S3 brought a high-performance focus to this compact model, equipped with a 1.8-litre 20-valve turbocharged engine.
At its debut, the S3 utilised this engine, which had appeared in the Mk1 Audi TT. However, the power output was initially detuned to 210 PS (207 bhp) from a potential 225 bhp. Despite this initial dip in power compared to the TT Mk1, the S3 quickly gained a dedicated following, praised for being sophisticated and smooth around town, while also coming alive on performance tarmac.
The vehicle’s driving dynamics included the Haldex system. Unlike the Torsen-style all-wheel drive found in the A4, the S3 featured Haldex, which raised questions regarding its ‘true’ Quattro status. Driving tests, however, reportedly alleviated these concerns.
For ride quality, the selection of wheels played a role. Owners who selected 18-inch wheels reported that the ride detracted from the car’s ride quality, whereas those keeping the smaller 17-inch rims found the quality was much more agreeable to everyday driving.
Internally, the S3 came standard with Recaro leather seats, while half leather, half Alcantara colour-coded seats were available as an option. Exterior changes were subtle, including a squared off body kit with flared arches, Xenon headlights, and twin chrome exhaust tailpipes.
For the 2000 model year, Audi introduced a facelift, fitting new one-piece headlight and indicator units, new front wings, different rear light clusters, and some alterations to the interior trim. Further increases in power occurred for the 2002-2003 model years, when the S3 was boosted to 225 PS (222 bhp).
