Arranging an Inspection of the Volvo V70
When considering the purchase of a used Second Generation Volvo V70 (or any used car), physical inspection is presented as the best approach. Purchasing a vehicle without physically inspecting it first is stated to almost always be a bad idea, although exceptions may occur if the car is sourced from a curated website or service.
Logistics and Timing
It is recommended that you arrange the inspection of the Mk2 V70 at the seller’s house or place of business. This allows you to observe where and how the V70 II is stored, whether it is always garaged or parked on the road. A further benefit of this arrangement is the ability to test out the roads the car is regularly driven on. If these roads are very rough and full of potholes, the suspension, steering, wheels, tyres, and other components may have sustained damage.
Regarding timing, try to look at the car in the morning instead of later in the day. This gives the seller less time to clean up potential issues, such as a large oil leak. Furthermore, inform the seller or owner that you do not want the car and engine warmed up before you arrive, as this can conceal issues.
Inspection Focus
Take a friend or helper with you to provide a second opinion on the vehicle. While these individuals do not need to be mechanically inclined, it is better if they are. A second person can assist with checking for smoke while you test drive the V70 II.
Be mindful of the weather. Water can hide numerous issues with the bodywork and paint, so if it is raining, you should consider going back for a second viewing. You must also be cautious if the car has been freshly washed before your inspection. While a washed car is normal, exercise caution if the car is still wet, or if the engine bay and underside have been washed. Finally, ask the seller to move the V70 II outside if the inspection is taking place in a showroom or garage. Direct sunlight will highlight any potential issues that may be hidden by indoor lighting.
