Making the SRT-4 Production Ready
The engineering team known as Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO) was tasked with converting the Neon concept into a production performance car. They replaced the original 2.0-litre engine with a turbocharged A853 2.4-litre inline-four, which used the basic design of Chrysler’s naturally aspirated 2.4 engines. This new turbocharged unit received several upgrades, including a stronger crankshaft, a thicker deck, and a cast aluminium structural oil pan. It also features higher capacity oil pump and improved aluminium alloy pistons made by Mahle.
The exhaust system required specific work due to the engine’s packaging. Mitsubishi designed the exhaust manifold and turbine housing as a single component, using the TD04LR-15Gk turbocharger. This one-piece design reduced the component’s overall size and reduced thermal mass while allowing for improved flow.
The engine is paired with a New Venture Gear T-850 five-speed manual transmission, along with a Sachs performance clutch and equal-length half shafts. To manage the increased power, the braking system was upgraded. The front features 280 mm (11-inch) vented disc brakes with 57 mm single piston calipers. The rear uses slightly smaller 270 mm (10.6 inch) non-vented discs, paired with 36 mm calipers.
Handling improvements include stiffer springs and SRT-tuned Tokico struts, alongside larger front and rear sway bars. For chassis updates, the SRT-4 features a unique steering gear, PT Cruiser steering knuckles, and an updated K member.
Traction is managed via 205/50/17 Michelin Pilot Sport performance tyres that fit 17 x 6-inch cast aluminium wheels. Chrysler specially designed these wheels to permit increased airflow to the brakes. The exterior also features a unique body kit, including new side skirts and a large rear wing.
The interior has been modified to match the performance exterior. Standard seats were replaced with those modelled after the Dodge Viper SRT-10, offering enhanced lumbar and side bolster support. The dashboard features unique SRT-4 gauges and a turbo boost gauge situated on the right of the instrument panel. Furthermore, the vehicle includes a faux carbon fibre steering wheel and shift boot, alongside satin silver shift knob and aluminium pedals. The SRT-4 retains power front windows while the rear windows remain manually operated.
